Hong Kong Art, Identity, and Space

SinArts Gallery, in its continuing quest to share knowledge about the contemporary chinese art world, has the pleasure of inviting Dr Sjoukje van der Meulen to give a talk at the gallery.

This talk addresses issues of identity and space in Hong Kong from the viewpoint of contemporary art. Questions of identity and space in Hong Kong are socially, culturally, and politically complex, especially in the broader fabric of today's global world. Glocally inspired artistic responses to/from Hong Kong might contribute to a different understanding of this vibrant postcolonial city beyond Western or Chinese perspectives.

Dr. Sjoukje van der Meulen is Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art at Utecht University. She received her PhD from Columbia University (New York, 2009). Sjoukje has a specialisation in global art history, with a focus on contemporary Chinese art.
