Unlocked/Reconnected

SinArts Gallery is happy to participate in Unlocked/Reconnected

Unlocked/Reconnected is an initiative that brings together a wide range of 'houses for art': museums, institutes for presentation, galleries, artists' initiatives and corporate collections. The point of departure for Unlocked/Reconnected is the idea of solidarity, the will to reflect collectively on what home is. Our world must not become fragmented, fractured into enclosing walls: a consolidation of forces and locations, national and international, can in fact show us what the house/home can mean. As an initiative Unlocked/Reconnected stems from a sense that opening up the home, in the aftermath of the lockdown, will force us to reconsider our outlook on this. Unlocked/Reconnected underlines the importance of art and culture in this period of global crisis.

Naoki Fuku, Mona Lisa, SD-card and oil on canvas, 30x40cm, 2011

In 2011 Naoki Fuku created his Mona Lisa in response what he perceived as the distancing of the art world to the public. The digitalisation materialised through selfie-culture made historically great art works no more than a collection of pixels on a screen. Little did he know that 10 years later, pushed along by the corona pandemic, the art world would be pushed to the brink, and searching for answers in a world where travel is heavily restricted, but the market tries to push along. The dominance of social media, like Instagram, the digitalisation of museum collections, but also the emergence of online viewing rooms hosted by art fairs and major international galleries have digitalised the viewing experience and the market for a large part of the audience. In that sense this art work was prophetic and regained all of its importance.
